gluten free trail mix




Any laws about cooking out of your home comercially?

I am looking to start a business that makes a gluten free trail mix. I don't have a very large source of capital, so I would like to begin my company from my home kitchen. Are there any rules or laws I need to know about this before I do so. I want to be able to sell my trail mix to people and businesses. Any advice or tips about starting my business or rules and regulations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! Here is what little bit I know...

First, Hi neighbor! I'm in Slidell, and be sure to check out our local CSA group, I know it's not close to you but you can certainly follow our blog for updates!

Second, you need to check with your parish and city's laws about food. I sell on Etsy and I know lots of people sell food on there..BUT I only buy from people who use certified kitchens that are liscenced and regulated...however I am not sure how they go about doing it!

Third, if you are looking to sell exclusively GF foods, I would def check deeper into the regulated kitchen because you will likely also want ot prove yoru kitchen is a GF dedicated one. And if you do get through that process, places like teh CSA, GIG, and the GFliving magazines are great places to use resoruces...perhaps you could even get CSA certified as a GF vendor!

To start out with I would start by selling/giving away samples to your local GF customers...I think BR has a CSA chapter, right? Start there! Offer them samples, let them "tweak" it for you with critiques and you'll have a better plan.

Side note, I did just read that the Obama administration is giving more to help small businesses...but I didn't read the whole article.

IF I were you, first, I'd get lots of feedback from your potential client base and then seek the proper rules for running a regulated kitchen. (I do not think it's that difficult, I think it's totally doable)
